IRON ORE AND PIG IRON

Pig iron, the product achieved when reducing iron ore in a blast furnace, is not forgeable because of its high carbon content (4%). The Lancashire process was a refining method converting pig iron into wrought iron by reducing the carbon to approx. 0.1%.

Pig iron was brought to Karmansbo from mines and blast furnaces at Hellsjö in Dalarna or Gäsjö in Norberg, on sledges, mostly in wintertime using  horses or oxen. Return journey 140 km.
